West System Hardeners

Curing speed of the hardener

There are different hardeners depending on your needs (fast, slow, for coating and UV protection, extra slow). Choose your hardener according to the working time you will need for the project you are going to realize and according to your conditions / temperature constraints.

Open time and cure time

The choice of hardener is crucial in determining the open time and cure time. The open time determines the number of minutes available for mixing, application, smoothing, shaping, assembly. The cure time of the epoxy determines how long you have to wait before sanding or moving on to the next step in your project.

    Fast hardener 205

Hardener 205 is a medium viscosity epoxy, used in most cases to achieve a fast cure that produces an epoxy with rapid physical properties.

When mixed with resin 105, at a ratio of 5 parts resin to 1 part hardener 205, produces a very high strength rigid solid.

The resin/hardener mixture has excellent cohesive properties and provides outstanding water vapor protection with excellent adhesion and coating properties at low temperatures.

  • Slow hardener 206

    Slow hardener 206

206 Slow Hardener is a low-viscosity epoxy curing agent for use when extended working time or a longer cure time is needed.

It also provides adequate working time at higher shop temperatures.

When combined with 105 Resin in a five-part epoxy resin to one-part hardener ratio, the cured resin/206 Slow Hardener mixture yields a rigid, high-strength, moisture-resistant solid with excellent bonding and barrier coating properties.

206 Slow Hardener is not intended for clear coating.

  • Special coating hardener 207

    Special coating hardener 207

Special Coating Hardener 207 was developed for the application of fiberglass coatings and fabrics where an exceptionally clear, moisture-resistant natural wood finish is desired.

Epoxy 105/207 has strong physical properties, so it can be used as a structural adhesive for bonding and laminating. It has excellent compatibility with paints and varnishes.

When mixed with 105 epoxy resin, 207 hardener will not yellow or become cloudy in wet conditions. The ultraviolet inhibitor in Special Clear Hardener 207 provides a beautiful, durable finish when used with a quality UV filtering varnish. The hardening of 105/207 is clear and colourless.

Professionals and beginners alike appreciate Special Clear Hardener 207 because it is reliable, easy to use, does not yellow and does not run off vertical surfaces. Three or more coats can be applied in one day without additional surface preparation. Boats can be built faster.

  • Extra slow hardener 209

    Extra slow hardener 209

Extra Slow Hardener 209 is formulated for use with Resin 105 for general coating and bonding applications in very hot and/or humid conditions, or where longer working times are required at room temperature.

Mixture 105/209 offers about twice the pot life and working life of hardener 206.

It forms a clear amber solid with excellent physical properties and resistance to moisture, making it suitable for adhesives, coatings and gypsum applications.
